I am now calling my garden a “Prayer garden” and maybe even an outdoor chapel, because this is a very spiritual place and practice.

As I’ve mentioned previously I use no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers, not even so-called “organic” or natural since those, too have collateral damage to pollinators. “Our” groundhog Miss Gordie has free access as do the deer, chipmunks, squirrels, birds and insects. My husband keeps the grass low to keep ticks away. I use grass and other garden clippings as mulch. I pick unwanted plants by hand. Native ground cover such as wood sorrel and wild violets are generally left alone. My wildflower seeds are from American Meadows and Fedco, and my native perennials are from a couple of local organic farms and Maine Audubon, also neonictinoid-free.
